EMV is the chip
Inserting a chip card creates a unique code per transaction, which is why counterfeit card fraud collapsed after chip adoption spread. It's slower than tapping but far more secure than the old magnetic stripe, which used the same static data every time.
NFC is the tap
Contactless cards and phone wallets use near-field communication to exchange data wirelessly at close range. It uses the same underlying security model as chip, is faster at the counter, and is increasingly what customers expect by default rather than as an option.
Liability shift is the part that costs money
If you accept a swipe when a chip was available and the transaction turns out to be fraudulent, the resulting loss can fall on you rather than the issuing bank. Accepting chip and contactless properly is a financial decision as much as a convenience one.
- Prompt customers for tap or chip, not swipe, whenever the reader allows
- Keep readers current and firmware updated
- Train staff not to bypass to swipe out of habit or impatience
Digital wallets
Apple Pay, Google Pay and similar wallets ride on the same contactless rails as a tap-to-pay card. If your reader accepts a tap, it accepts those too, with no separate setup or additional equipment required.
Why customers increasingly expect tap
Contactless adoption has grown steadily, and many customers now reach for a tap before considering any other method. A reader that only accepts swipe or insert can noticeably slow down checkout and feel dated compared to competitors.
Security beyond liability shift
Chip and contactless transactions generate dynamic data unique to that single transaction, meaning even if the data were intercepted, it couldn't be reused to create a counterfeit card the way a stolen magnetic stripe number could.
What this means for your equipment
Any modern terminal from Clover or Square supports chip, contactless and mobile wallets out of the box. There's no separate purchase or subscription needed to enable tap-to-pay once you have current hardware in place.
